GOOD FRIDAY

Let's deep into what feast day is Good Friday. To search for the origin, we must go to passages of the Gospel in which the Christ's Passion is narrated, from his entry into Jerusalem (Palm Sunday), beginning at that time Holy Week, until his death, on Good Friday.

Good Friday is the day of Jesus Christ's death

The high priests brought Jesus before Poncio Pilato because he was considered a troublemaker since he proclaimed himself "Son of God". Due to the pressure of the crowd he was condemned to crucifixion.

According to Christian tradition, Jesus Christ died at 3 pm at the age of 33

Pontius Pilate, according to the Gospel of Matthew, washed his hands with water in front of the people to declare himself innocent of the blood of that man. This expression has reached our days.

WHAT IS CELEBRATED

On that day is remembered the suffering standed byJesus.  He was flogged and on his way to Calvary (a hill outside Jerusalem where the crucifixions took place) had to carry the cross in which he would be crucified later. He was placed a crown of thorns mid the scorns.

The genuine celebration of that day is the forgiveness of men´s sins through this suffering.

HOW IT IS CELEBRATED

As read, Good Friday is a day for reflection, repentance for the sins commited and prayer.

On that day different events take place such as:

  • For the Catholic Church is a day of penance and fasting and especially not eating meat. Traditionally it is a day for fish dishes and the Vigil chickpea stew is tipical.
  • On Good Friday the Eucharist is not celebrated, but is replaced by Easter Liturgy, usually in the afternoon. In this liturgy the Passion of Christ is read according to the gospel of Saint John.
  • It is common to pray the Via Crucis that is, to pray while going through the 14 stations. The way to evoke the path that Jesus took till Mount Calvary.
  • It is a particulary important day for processions. It goes out to the streets the religious processions showing the passion scenes of Christ.

HOW THE DATE OF HOLY WEEK IS CALCULATED

To calculate when Easter will be, Easter Sunday will be the first Sunday after the first full moon that follows the spring equinox. This can be between March 22 and April 25.
